Captain Walter Stirling Ommanney

Son of Francis Molyneux Ommanney, sometime MP for Barnstaple, and Georgina Frances Hawkes, Walter Stirling Ommanney was born in 1808 and baptised on 13 September at Mortlake.

He became a Captain in the 2nd Madras Cavalry, and married Marianne Morton on 5 May 1842 at Calcutta.

The sole reason for this entry is the following fine watercolour which recently appeared on an auction house website:

A watercolour portrait of Captain W.S. Ommanney of the 2nd Regiment of Madras Light Cavalry. The Regiment was stationed initially at Jaulnah and then Kolapore before being ordered to Trichinoply. Ommanney appears to have joined the regiment in 1827 and is shown as on furlough in 1840. From the design of the lace on his collar it is clear that he is affiliated to one of the many regiments of Madras Light Cavalry that existed as part of the HEIC during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Captain Ommanney died 18 November 1866 at Bologne, France. At the time of his death he was living at 2 George Street, Portman Square, London. Marianne died on 19 November 1893.
